🧪 Garden Experiments

I live on a busy corner of Penn Ave in Garfield. Despite the traffic noise in front of our house, our backyard is a peaceful oasis. Many passersby ask about how I went about planning and designing my garden. I’ll be honest, there was never an official plan or vision for what the garden is today; it's been more of an experiment over 10 years, with a few small garden ideas and sketches sprinkled in along the way.
I've approached my garden as one big experiment. About once a year, I try something new. During the summer, I observe what I've planted, noting what thrives and what may not be doing well. At the end of the summer, I use the fall to make a few edits and plant some things for the following year. Year after year, I keep a notebook full of what I liked, what I won't do again, and reminders of things to try in the future. The results haven't been instant, but the journey has been worth it. Since we moved into our house, the garden has transformed into a lush and tranquil space.
Recently, I took a walk down memory lane to remind myself of where I started and how far I’ve come with the garden. I know people love a “before and after” story, so here are a few photos from over the years that illustrate the transformation. Enjoy!
